Winter 2022: Mindfulness Connects Us

Did you know that, there is a thriving community of mindfulness practitioners in Northern Minnesota? They come from all walks of life, and ages. They know that life is unpredictable, and that stress can be a help or a hinderance….they have learned that mindfulness meditation is one positive thing they can do to engage in life, improving their health, contentment, and connection to the people and things they love!

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) teaches basic skills that access your natural abilities to connect more fully in friendships, family, work and play. Developed by Dr. Jon Kabat Zinn in 1979 at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction is an approach to wellbeing that has helped thousands of people worldwide realize their potential to function better and suffer less.

At the heart of MBSR is mindfulness, an inherent human capacity to pay attention on purpose to what is happening in the body, mind and immediate environment moment by moment, with curiosity and non-judgment. MBSR teaches several forms of mindfulness meditation, mindful movement and mindful communication as fundamental sources of wellbeing. The approach is well supported in the literatures of neuroscience, psychology and education.

The instructor, Geri Wilimek, LICSW is a Certified MBSR teacher trained at the University of Massachusetts Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Healthcare and Society and at Brown University Center for Mindfulness in the School of Public Health. She has been practicing mindfulness meditation since 2005, and began teaching MBSR classes in 2009.
