My studies and training have been been parallel. My buddhist studies (initiated by my curiosity about dharma after my introduction to MBSR) were determined by what was available in my rural location, which happened to be a sangha led by a Soto Zen priest. When my original teacher died in 2012, I continued to lead the sangha in Bemidji and eventually became ordained in the Soto Zen lineage of Dainin Katagiri. My second guiding teacher, was Shoken Winecoff,( founder and abbot at Ryumonji Zen Monastery, Dorchester, Iowa (www. ryumonji.org) ) This is why you see the Zen retreats listed. These retreats have been instrumental in my in my depth of understanding of dharma, and my growth as a teacher in secular and Zen contexts. I am happy to elaborate on this at the request of my Certification evaluator. Aware of the requirements in the Oasis Program that MBSR teachers needed immersion in vipassana training, I have completed two extended Vipassana retreats. (see below). I intend to continue with the vipassana retreats as a part of my dharma practice. I would conclude by saying, Certification aside, my dharma studies over the past 15 years have been about nothing but personal growth and that growth has included a desire to teach. I am most comfortable in the Jon Kabat-Zinn lineage of “universal dharma”. I teach “one dharma” in both secular and zen contexts, informed by my own life and practice, and from both vipassana and zen literature and traditions.
