Settling In: Staying with mindfulness practice

This winter a new class will be offered for people who have taken MBSR and want to enrich their practice.  The class will meet in four half-day sessions, and will include familiar and new mindfulness practices, discussion generated by concerns and interests of participants, and readings from a variety of sources.  First class is Saturday January 19, from 8:00to 12:00.  Sign up by Friday, January 11, 2013!  Click here for details.

Mindfulness By Day

Dark days, cold weather, and the quiet that comes after holiday celebrations. Winter is  a great time for beginning a mindfulness meditation practice.  If you are reluctant to drive at night during the winter, good news!  In addition to the evening MBSR course, there will be a daytime course offered, Tuesdays throughout February and March from 1:00pm to 3:30pm.  You will have plenty of time to get home before the sun goes down.   Click Here  for details.

Begin Again!

Happy New Year! Hey, lets be careful about those New Years Resolutions.  A year is a huge chunk of time.  Before you sign on the dotted line, consider some mindfulness-based approaches to change:

  • Set a direction, not a goal
  • Feel free to make wise “in-flight corrections” as you move in your chosen direction
  • If it all falls apart, laugh and  begin again.
  • And again.
  • And again.

Daytime and Evening MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) classes will be held during Winter 2013.  See Class Schedule Page for details.

A Day of Silent Practice: November 10, 2012

Its time again for a whole day of guided mindfulness practice on Saturday, November 10, 2012.  Everyone who has taken MBSR in the past is welcome to join this day of practice.  Bring a lunch to eat mindfully, dress comfortably, in layers, and show up just a bit early so you can get your bearings and settle in before we begin.  Coffee, tea and water will be provided, along with some healthy snacks.  We will start promptly at 9:00am and end at 4:00pm.  The class will be held at  First Lutheran Church Labyrinth Room. Click here for a map.  You may wish to contribute a snack to share, but this isn’t required.   Just come.  Just be.    Geri

Sitting Generates Goodwill

The MBSR summer sitting group was  a pleasant experience.  First Lutheran Church  donated the space and the group was free of charge.  Each week people left free will donations, and by the end of the summer we collected $125 to donate to the Bemidji Food Shelf!  Makes me smile.  Geri

Summer Sitting After the Storm: Not Happening

Hello all,  This is probably obvious, but we won’t be sitting at First Lutheran Church tonight.  There is a curfew citywide in effect, and many of us have serious messes to clean up after the visit last evening from Mother Nature.  I hope everyone is okay, and if you had damage it was tolerable.  Around my house, all of the broken trees released a scent into the air that permeates everything.  See you next week, 5:30-6:30p.m. , First Lutheran Labyrinth Room

Summer Sitting is Underway!

MBSR alumni and others who have a meditation practice are invited to sit each Tuesday, June through August 2012.  We gather from 5:30-5:40pm, meditate for a 30-40 minute period,  visit briefly and leave by 6:30!  This week one person brought a mat and quietly practiced yoga during the meditation period. Because we have a beautiful, large space this worked very well.   The discussion afterward focused on the way summer highway construction can both challenge and teach us.  First Lutheran Church is located at 9th and Bemidji Ave, Bemidji, MN.  Park in the lot, enter the northeast door, and follow signs to the sitting space.

Summer Sitting!

For many of us, spring has been filled with events ranging from difficult to joyous, yard work, projects, gardening, and other manifestations of the “full catastrophe”.  Doing often outweighs being.  Summer sitting is a weekly opportunity for letting go of doing and entering silence. A chance to literally “catch your breath”.  Come and sit in silence, lightly touch base with your fellow meditation practitioners, and make an intentional transition from day to evening.  Space for summer sitting has been generously offered by First Lutheran Church on 9th and Bemidji Ave. Cushions and chairs are available, but feel free to “bring your own”.  The door will be open from 5:30 to 5:40, then locked for security.  We will sit from 5:40 to 6:10 or 6:20, visit a bit, and be finished promptly at 6:30.  Feel free to tell others, and bring friends who have a meditation practice.  There is no charge;  voluntary donations will be given to the Bemidji Food Shelf.   Looking forward to seeing you…Geri
